Start-ups are the latest buzz in the employment sector. Its popularity amongst the millennials is increasing day by day. Nonetheless, choosing a start-up over an established company is not easy. You will have to give up being associated with a big name, well-defined in-house expertise and a good pay to join a tiny start-up that is just kicking off. Your job role wouldn’t be defined. The pay might be good; however, most people won’t even know the name of the start-up. It is a big risk but you can consider taking it if the core product / service of the start-up that you are thinking to join excites you and see the potential of it growing well in the future.

Keeping aside all the negative factors, joining a start-up means being a part of a fast-paced company. The job will be unsettling, fun and keep you on your toes. It will take you out of your comfort zone and open your eyes to those aspects of your jobs that you thought never existed. To put it more elaborately, it will have the following benefits:

1 Enormous Learning:
Working with a start-up offers you a steep learning curve. It leaves you with no choice but to learn and adapt fast. You may have a degree in finance; you will be involved in other functional areas as well. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to come up with a social media marketing strategy. Rather, use it as an opportunity to expand your knowledge while you are on the job which is not possible with an established company.

  1. Fast-paced Growth:
After a point, everybody’s career growth becomes stagnant while working with an established organization. There are too many people competing for a promotion.  Due to well-defined roles, the scope to deliver something beyond one’s set targets is very limited. However, if you work hard and smartly at a start-up, your career can grow by leaps and bounds in terms of promotions. The competition isn’t much as the people involved are very few and the open-ended nature of your KRAs will give you ample opportunities to prove your metal in the start-up firm.
  2. No Room for Politics:                                                                                                                 Everybody who has worked with a big corporate would agree that office politics affects their willingness to work adversely. Most corporate employees complain about the lack of acknowledgment of their efforts because it never reaches the people in authority. One of the best things about working with a start-up is transparency. You don’t have to worry about getting your due credit since you work closely with the founders and co-founders.  They are always aware of your contribution in the success.
  3. Innovation & Problem-Solving Attitude:
Working in a start-up gives you an access to the company leaders which means you can learn great things from true innovators. Entrepreneurs have unique professional insights and attitude. You can learn a great deal from them as they are the innovators. They see problems differently and come up with original and creative ways to address it. Innovation and problem-solving mindset are two great thinks one can learn at a start-up. This is not possible when you are working under a manager at a big corporate.
  4. Awesome Work Culture:
The work culture at start-ups is great! The people are more focused on how good you are at your work rather than what you wear. Everybody involved in the assignment shares the same level of excitement and passion for the common objective. There is never a dull moment and everybody is friendly as there is less emphasis laid on hierarchy. Another great thing is that people never forget to celebrate success. Your time working for a start-up will be full of doing loads of fun activities and partying.
  5. Expand Your Network:

Your association with a start-up will give the chance to meet new people, including stakeholders, customers, collaboration partners and other start-up enthusiasts. Your network will grow exponentially which is essential for your own success as well as for the growth of your start-up. The efforts you make today in nurturing your network and the relationship you share with people will help you later in life, both personally and professionally.

People use their own set of parameters to choose between job offers and work with a start-up may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But, if you are ready to move out of your comfort zone, you can make a successful career in a start-up despite how small or unknown it may be in the marketplace.
